Thijs Kelder is a Rotterdam artist / graphic designer known as Studio Ruwedata. He works on the borderline of design, typography and visual arts.
His recent works of art are laminated wood / wall sculptures that form a rich collage of typographical slogans, illustrations and parts of neon advertisements – framed with the typical Las Vegas language style.
The neon signs by which he is inspired are characterized by flashing light and color. By pulling this out of context and strip them to the black/white core, they get a melancholy edge. He takes timeless subjects like love, temptations, violence and ageing as a theme. For the one who see through it, the work has a humorous impact, but the message is often socially critical.
